Now that I’ve got that big complaint out of the way I can talk about how great my vacation was, that is, if you’ve made it this far. Since it was close-ish to Christmas and a family gathering we decided to go out and get a Christmas tree, and along the way we stopped at a little river my brother liked to go to to explore and take some photos. After climbing around and taking a bunch, I asked if they’d like to go start looking for a Christmas tree while I shot some more photos since they’d seemed done with the area. My brother however didn’t want to do that as he’d heard of animal attacks around and didn’t want to leave me alone there, which was nice.
This was the first time pulling out both Horo and Alice for a little photoshoot in front of my family. They watched while I setup and take some photos and my mother made comments like “Anna Karenina is falling!”. She had already seen Alice as I’d BBM’d her a photo and Alice reminded her of Anna Karenina from the movie of the same name, played by Keira Knightly. Thus she would continually refer to her as Anna or Anna Karenina. This was also the first time I had two dollfies to try and setup, it took considerably longer than just one, and they got bored watching pretty quickly. This would be a running theme. I took the girls pretty much everywhere but rarely had a chance to stop and take photos. They would of course later say “we weren’t complaining!” and no, they didn’t complain, they did however go and wait around the car or sit inside it indicating their readiness to leave. If there was a negative on this trip beyond the initial flight, that would be it, and really it wasn’t that bad, it just made me feel rushed, but you’ll hear about it constantly if you read on.
Afterwards we went out looking for that elusive ‘perfect’ Christmas tree. We saw what looked like many perfect trees but they were lies, when you looked more closely they were actually two trees really close together, a common occurrence. Eventually we found a rather tall tree, way too tall for my brothers tiny pickup truck but that was ‘the one’. Even better, it was already marked to be cut down! We loaded it into the truck and let it dangle over the end and headed back to my brothers place. This was the first time in many many years that we’d had a real tree, it was kind of nice, even if we did destroy a bit of nature for it. But, since it was already marked to get cut down as it would have interfered with the powerlines above relatively soon, we didn’t feel too bad about it. Once we got the tree back ‘home’ we realized it was way too tall and had to lop another ~30-40 cm off it before bringing it in. I think the ceiling was something like 4-5 meters high and the tree pretty much reached the top. We also didn’t have any decorations, so we went and bought some cheap stuff to decorate the tree and my brother topped it off with his dirt bike helmet. Perfect.
Afterwards I took Horo and Alice out of the backpack I’d borrowed from my sister to fix their hair and check for staining or damage during the flight and excursion that day. I still wasn’t sure how well the semi-white bodied Alice would deal with dirty situations like being thrown on rocks outside and in the dirt, or without the coolcat joint reinforcement bits how strong she’d be. After this check I didn’t bother to check them out until I got back home to On-terrible.
