Review: Kotobukiya’s Shigure Asa (Long Hair ver.)

Let’s go back a few months, more than a few months, all the way back to August of 2009 when Shigure Asa arrived on my door step. Like last weeks review of Azaka, Asa’s presence in the wild seems lacking to almost non-existent, though having been out there longer than Azaka she has received some attention. To help make up for this deficit of Asa on the Internets today I choose you Asa.

Shigure Asa comes from the hit ero-game by Navel titled Shuffle! (with the exclamation point!). Shuffle! was so popular it’s even received a commercially available English translation. Shuffle! has also been made into an anime, manga, audio drama as well as various other kind of merchandise. Of course Asa was my character of choice in the game and anime due to her cute looks and playful personality… and her hot MILF of which there are some scenes with in one of the Shuffle! related games.

This particular sculpt of Asa was crafted by Munetoshi Makio for Kotobukiya, who’s done a few figures I like (1, 2, 3, 4), as well as another I’ve purchased. There were also two versions of this figure, the special edition long haired version like I bought as well as the standard release short haired version. The MSRP for this version of Asa was ¥6,800 / $78 CAD (Aug ’09) though I paid around $52 CAD for her from Toys Logic. 1/8th seems to be the standard size of anime figures and Asa here does not deviate, she measures in at approximately 16.5 cm tall and was released back in June of 2009. Her standard release counter part was released in December of 2008, quite a time gap between the two.

Munetoshi has chosen an interesting pose for his sculpt of Asa, for those of you who haven’t seen Shuffle! the anime or played the game this pose is from a particular scene. Munetoshi however has er neatened it up a little by keeping Asa’s panties up over her bum. But in the game/anime she’s midway through pulling them down as the protagonist walks in on her. It’s a great scene and I’m happy Munetoshi chose it, because every time I look at Asa I remember that scene. Though of course, in that scene Asa has short hair.

Like nearly all 1/8th Kotobukiya figures the paintwork is mediocre, so far never poor, but also never out standing. Asa has all the right colours in all the right places and is definitely Asa and no one else, but still is lacking. Maybe I should stop looking for colour depth in 2-dimensional anime characters but I still feel like there should be some. There’s some depth there, like in her thighhighs or hair, but really nothing to tell your friends about. I do like her green striped panties though, really helps illustrate the curves of her bum.

Unfortunately Asa also suffers from mediocrity in her sculpt quality as well. There are a few defects in this sculpt, the most noticeable for me is the hair around her face, it seems lumpy where it should be smooth and pointy. Other issues such as injection points or markings on the back of her right leg, panties on the right side, above her thighhighs on her left leg, the back of her hair next to her right arm and lastly a mark on the front of her right leg just above the thighhigh. So quite a few marks all over her, but I admit none of them are overly visible with a casual glance. I think they should have been easily fixed though, or avoided but QC was a little lacking.

Overall this is a slightly above mediocre attempt at a character I really liked, and to be honest I really wish I hadn’t bought this version. The long hair really doesn’t suit this figure at all, the shorter hair looks far far better on Asa in general so I’m not really sure why I pre-ordered this figure when I could have just bought the standard release. Hard to say what I was thinking 10 months ago when I made the pre-order. Despite that, I’m a fan of zettai ryouiki, this figure has that, I’m a fan of nice bums, Asa has a wonderful bum, thighgap which this figure also has, as well as nice bums oh did I say that already?

Do I have a one track mind? All the pictures seem to be focused on one thing…

  • Stipes
  • Wonderful pose from a wonderful scene
  • Long hair

  • Mediocre paintwork
  • Average sculpt work
  • Long hair isn’t canon in this scene 🙁

I don’t really like thius Shuffle character, but this long hair version is reallu cute. I prefer character with long hair, thus, I prefer this adaptation at the first. The face expression is adorable, and she seems nice (a kotobukiya figure ^^). Thank for this share !

    • Aka says:

I tend to lean towards characters with long hair as well. If one were to look at my collection I think they’d see the majority of my figures have long hair. However in this instance I believe short haired Asa to be the superior version. She’s much cuter I think that way.

Lovely review once again. It’s clear, concise, and informative — I really need to learn from your example, haha.

Believe it or not, I have never noticed her bum until you pointed it out in this review, despite having seen her in the bargain bin of the local anime store multiple times (the short haired version, that is). Now that you pointed it out, I can’t blame you for having for having a one-track mind, since it’s practically the focal point of the figure. I Wonder how I missed it before, hrmmm…

By the way, would you be interested in trading links/banners? I have placed this site on the my blogroll and links page because I genuinely like it, so there’s no pressure to reciprocate. If you are interested, shoot me an email.

    • Aka says:

Haha I never really thought of myself as clear and concise, I’m glad someone does! Thanks!

I too wonder how you missed it. Perhaps other reviewers are more tasteful with their photography than I?

Sure I’ll throw a banner up. It’s lookin’ a bit lopsided with 3 on one side and 2 on the other, I need another to balance it out 😉

  3. Ashlotte says:

Wow talk about coincidence…Was contemplating getting one of these tonight, but wasn’t sure about whether I liked short or long hair better and you go right ahead and post a nice review for me Aka. ~_^

Defiantly think the short hair version is the winner of the two.

    • Aka says:

Glad I could be of assistance! I agree with you, the short haired version is definitely the one to get of the two. I chose wrong 🙁 I really wish I could remember what I was thinking a year ago…

  4. Rico-sama says:

    Ah, another Asa-senpai fan!

This is the first time I’ve seen the long hair version in detail. I think you’re right that the pose really isn’t fitting for the long hair effect. It’s cute, but not really fitting. Plus, she technically wasn’t sporting long hair during the scene in question so it’s not show accurate. 😛

It’s interesting that you call Asa’s paint job “mediocre”; I thought it was one of Kotobukiya’s better attempts.

Oh, and she has a great bum indeed. 😉

    • Aka says:

A good Kotobukiya paint job seems to be at best decent, they’re never good or great like Alter or GSC. Unless you’re talking about their 1/6th scale Eva figures. So mediocre describes this figure quite well, I don’t think the paint job stands out as anything else.

I think I’ve only ever heard of one person who preferred the long hair version, and it’s Leonia above. Everyone else I think has preferred the short version, myself included.

I keep considering purchasing the short haired version and having both. But I feel that’s only for obsessive people and I’m only obsessive about one character and her name’s not Asa.

      • Rico-sama says:

Instead of being completely obsessive you could be partially obsessive and buy Alter’s version of Asa. 😉

        • Aka says:

I didn’t like Alters. They made her look almost chubby or something. I suppose that’s not the right word, but she looks heavier than she should. Or is it just me?
