Christmas Figure Wishlist (2009)
Christmas is fast approaching, reminding me that I really need to get out to a mall and do some shopping for family and friends! But more importantly, reminding me of things I wish I had myself. Ok, I’m maybe just a teensy bit self-centered, but lets ignore that for now. The list contains 10 figures I’ll likely never obtain, the vast majority of which seem to be garage kits, and two are very much just wishful thinking on my part, very wishful. A true wishlist!
(Contains Mature Content)
Company: Good Smile Company
Release: September 2008 / May 2009
Price: ¥5,239 / $52 CAD (Sept ’08)
Notes: Also has an alternate version with her eyes closed.
I’ve wanted this particular figure for quite some time but some how missed both releases! First release I was still recovering from the purchase of Taki Corps Horo and very skeptical of purchases and asking lots of questions, so I never even considered purchasing her at the time. 2nd release however I tried to find her but she was sold out everywhere before I even got there. Months after her re-release Miku is still in high demand, commanding hefty prices on eBay, sometimes reaching and even exceeding the $300 mark! At prices like those I’ll likely never own this version of Miku, she’s not dear enough to my heart to spend that much on such a standard release PVC figure. I’ve seen open boxes of Miku around the internets going for considerably less money than eBay, but always ran into some issue such as no being able to ship to Canada or the seller not responding to emails. Maybe I’m just not meant to own GSC’s Miku.
Series: Fate/Stay Night
Company: Volks, Inc
Release: May 2009
Price: ¥50,400 / $600 CAD (May ’09)
Notes: Limited Run. Alternate clothes can be had for an additional ¥10,290 / $122 CAD.
Thanks to many links off foo-bar-baz’s website to many different sites containing pictures of Dollfies I’ve become quite attached to them as well. But their price is astronomical, their clothes alone cost more than the clothes I wear everyday! These dolls aren’t small either, they’re 1/3rd scale making them I believe upwards of 60 cm tall! But size isn’t a worry, I can easily find space for Rin to sit on one of my shelves. I do however wonder what friends would say when they saw them, the figures can be tossed off as being statues and perhaps slightly more manly that way, but $600 poseable dolls? eek! Plus I’d have to take up sewing to make more clothes for her. An additional note, if $600 wasn’t enough for you, she seems to be going for $3,000!!!! on eBay. Who’s that crazy?
Series: Fate/Stay Night
Company: Volks, Inc
Release: April 2008 / December 2008
Price: ¥54,600 – ¥99,750 / $740 – $1350 CAD (Dec 08)
Notes: Both are limited run and have additional sets of clothes that cost between ¥9,240 / $125 CAD and ¥13,440 / $182 CAD.
Like the above Tohsaka Rin Dollfie, I found these thanks to foo-bar-baz. And like the above Tohsaka Rin go for obscenely expensive prices on eBay ranging between $2,300 to $4,200 CAD. One really has to be dedicated and/or rich to purchase these dolls. I certainly could not set aside that kind of cash on a 60 cm tall doll. That doesn’t stop me from wanting to be able to however, they’re definitely cute. I’d like to see one in person, it’s hard to grasp just how big 1/3rd scale is, I’m always surprised when I get a 1/6th scale figure and how big they seem to be. It’s no wonder Volks, Inc made $50 million in 2008.
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Price: $82 USD / $86 CAD
Notes: Unofficial Garage Kit, though can be found pre-assembled and painted for $260 USD / $275 CAD.
I’ve come across this one a number of times over the years and on and off I’ve wanted it. However there were never any good pictures (and I might argue still aren’t many) of finished models. One issue is they all seem to have terrible cameras (some how all worse than cellphone cameras), but another issue is each one is different due to the manual labour involved in painting and assembling. Each person adds their own touches and changes making each unique. A site with a reputation for not being exactly the most legitimate company, e2046, has this kit available in both unassembled unpainted garage kit as well as pre-painted and assembled. I’m not willing however to purchase a $275 item, especially with the poor quality pictures available on the internets. I eventually found this site, which had some decent-ish pictures of this figure and I re-fell in love with it. She’s by no means a perfect Asuka, I have plenty of issues, I think her breasts are too large and her face awkward, but given the figure in it’s entirety, it’s not very cannon anyway. The thing that stood out for me though was the tight leather racing suit she was wearing and it’s profile from her left side, and how nice it makes her bum look. Very appealing, that’s the side I would display for sure.
Series: Spice & Wolf
Sculptor: Turu no Yataka
Release: May 2008
Price: $30 USD / $31 CAD
Notes: An unofficial Garage Kit.
This garage kit by Turu no Yataka has been around for about a year and a half, however I’d never come across pictures of her so well painted so far. This person whomever they are has done an exceptional job painting Horo, I would love to own this figure with this sort of paint job. I’ve often considered buying the garage kit from e2046 but well, laziness and lack of skill prevent me from doing so. I have one minor complaint about the sculpt though, both her ears are nearly identical in shape, they should differ somewhat. It makes them look overly fake, where as with Good Smile Company and Volks, they have one ear tilted or positioned differently which seems to add some realism to it for me.
Series: Spice & Wolf
Notes: My own idea, may not fly with others.
This is a true wishlist item as it will never ever exist, and as such I unfortunately only have this extremely poor photoshop I made of Ann Yosh’s picture. I got the idea after seeing the above figure of Asuka on a motorcycle and a picture of Horo cosplaying as Hatsune Miku (source) the thought crossed my mind, Horo in racing leathers! If I could get a figure with Horo in a similar pose to Asuka’s pose above on a Ducati showing off her tightly leather wrapped bum and exposed tail (ok, not very safe at the race track, but appealing none the less) I would be willing to fork out some rather large bills for it’s acquisition, assuming proper build and paint quality. Maybe one day I’ll be creative enough to modify or produce my own figure, but the possibility of that happening is slimmer than someone else producing it without prior knowledge of my request. Personally, I’m not much of a motorcycle person, I’d definitely kill myself on a bike because I drive rather quickly and aggressively as it is. But Horo in a car just isn’t that appealing, because of a car’s general enclosed nature and you’d never know it was her anyway due to her sitting on her tail. So a bike works out perfectly in this respect! Odd request no?
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Price: $32 USD / $34 CAD
Notes: Garage Kit
Getting back onto something a bit more normal, Ayanami Rei (Rei, normal? oxymoron?). There are a number of Ayanami Rei garage kits out there I’d like to get, among them is this one by Atomic-Bom. Rei is quite cute chained to that cross with her dress falling off, sounds like I’m into bondage… Unfortunately since this is a garage kit I can either pay $34 and then try to paint it myself and fail miserably, or I can spend way too much money to have someone else do it and trust that they’ll do it acceptably well. So the likelihood of me getting this is fairly low, like just about everything on my wishlist. None the less, a cute Rei!
Price: A lot
Notes: Way cuter than Asimo
A life size Drossel would be far better than Asimo, Honda should give up on that robot, poor thing can only walk, ‘run’ and fall down stairs. Drossel would be a far better product, the market for Drossel is huge right now, it would be smart of Honda to capitalize on that while it’s still hot. I imagine it might be difficult to get to market so quickly though, Drossel would be fairly complicated to construct. But, if Honda were to do so, I’d buy one for sure! I mean, who wouldn’t want a life-sized Drossel?! I suppose there’d be a bit of an issue with her trying to destroy humans… but I’m sure we can convince her not to! I wonder how much a life-sized Drossel would cost? Asimo costs $1 million USD, but there are only 100 Asimos out there. Drossel would be so much more marketable and in demand, they could easily produce more than 100 and bring the cost down. I’ll definitely need more than my recent raise to purchase one though.

Well it took forever but here it is, weeks late but it's better late than never right? Perhaps I'm even fashionably late! Comparing this WonFes post to my previous it's a bit smaller and has less pictures, I attribute that to just a lack of interest in a lot of stuff displayed this season. Entire companies with not a single product of interest to me can cause quite a shrink. Since the article is smaller and I've upgraded my server since last WonFes hopefully there'll be no errors spewed or long load times this time around! (Y'all remember that right? So long ago.)... more »
