Review: Alpha x Omega’s Yami & Good Smile Company’s Yami
Alpha x Omega’s Yami
Alpha x Omega knows how to do it. While I may not always like the character, or the chosen pose, they always seem to be at the very top tier. They’re not perfect though as Rico finds Kallens face lacking in tone. But that aside this rendition of Yami is top notch. Though hard to take a lot of pictures of, I feel like I covered everything, but it feels like so few pictures compared to GSC’s Yami.
Snu Tanaka sculpted this Yami variant, and so far as I know, it’s his only commercially released figure. Perhaps he’s done something else in the past but I’m not aware of it. This Yami is also 1/8th scale and retailed for ¥6,615 / $90 CAD. Since I had to purchase her off eBay, I paid $95 CAD plus shipping. Which isn’t bad at all, cost only an extra $5.
When images of this figure first crossed my path I thought perhaps she was sitting on a coffee mug, due in part to the logo on the side. It seemed more like a steaming cup of coffee than a chimney stack. But of course that wouldn’t make much sense at all, especially after seeing the latter on the side. I found this addition to the base made the figure as a whole much more attractive. Adding a bit of creativity to the whole piece.
Mr Tanaka’s sculpting work is very well done, lots of detail everywhere. Her clothes waving in the wind up top of whichever building she’s sat upon, the lump in her cheek of the tayaki she’s munching on, and her hair flowing out. Her clothes appear to be wrinkled where they should be, and even her bag filled with tayaki has creases and folds like a paper bag. He even sculpted her in such a way that you can see her white panties, but can’t photograph them.
The paintwork is superior to Good Smile Company’s Yami. Her hair appearing more yellow and fuller, her attire appearing less flat in colour as well. Her skin tone is less pale than GSC’s Yami, by perhaps a shade or two. The chimney has a simple but nice paint job, darker at the edges than the middle with a bit of gradient blending the two colours together. The white base on which everything sits is rather plain indeed, and blends almost right into the white backdrop I used.
There are some minor issues with the paintwork though, despite my claim to it being superior. On Yami’s right leg near the top strap, they didn’t paint the strap entirely. There’s a small portion right at an edge where it’s skin coloured and of course looks strange. There are also some tiny bubbles in a few places in her hair, so tiny though one wouldn’t likely notice them. Other than those, she’s nearly flawless.
Nearing the end of the photo-shoot Yami decided to commandeer my Coke, I can’t blame her though. She probably needed something to wash those tayaki down, plus the heat these past days.
Conclusion…
I think both these figures are well done, obviously though one more than the other. But Good Smile Company’s Yami surprised me, despite the somewhat flat paint she turned out quite well and rather interesting. I just love her blade hand. In fact I’m reminded of something Rico-sama said once, something along the lines of Girls with Guns and Babes with Blades. I’m personally not much into weaponry, but some how the combination of cute girl + <insert weapon here> is extremely appealing. And no, it’s not because that could also be a euphemism for other things.
I don’t think I’ll do this double review thing again. It didn’t work out well in the formatting side of things. But it was fun to try out.

Nice presentation !
I didn’t even know that AxO’s Yami existed! Before I would have (ignorantly) claimed that GSC’s was the best, but you’ve made me want the AxO sculpt more! (Though some of those angles make it look like she’s sitting on a toilet.)
I kinda disagree with your take on the Yamis’ hair though. When I looked at the pics my read was that AxO’s coloring is bolder but lacking in shading/highlight and GSC’s is paler but has more of both those.
My own preference is the GSC execution, but I actually think both figures executed their hair perfectly for their sculpt. Bolder colors on GSC Yami would make her hair “heavy” and distracted attention away from her face, while paler, better shaded colors on AxO Yami wouldn’t have contrasted with Yami’s outfit nearly as well. Just my two cents.
I LOL’d at your story. I forget, are you one of those “one character, one figure” people?
I started to think that after I’d finished the article. And since it was already written I didn’t want to go back through and re-edit.
That said, GSC Yami’s hair is far too dull I think. This could in part be due to the fact AxO’s Yami arrived first and I got used to her vibrantly coloured hair. But you’re definitely right, GSC’s Yami has some shading vs next to none on AxO’s Yami.
I’m not one of those one character, on figure people. I’ve got one Shiki with another on the way, I own 3 Horos, and have 2 more on the way. I own 2 Haruhi’s as well. I also want to buy Kotobukiya’s Corticarte from Polyphonica. I already own GSC’s Corti.
But back when I’d pre-ordered the Yami’s I was leaning towards the one character, one figure mantra.
Note: I may have given away some of the stuff from the mystery box
OK, so dumb question. XD Yeah, had I thought about it a second and remembered your extensive Horo collection alone, the answer would have been obvious!
Wasn’t GSC Yami part of the mystery box? If not, then I’m completely lost on the box’s content.
Yeah GSC Yami was indeed part of it.
Yeah, I’m totally a Horo fiend. I can’t help it.
I’d totally be an Eruru fiend too if there were good figures.
Good, but I have no clue what else is/was in the box.
You know, you’re right. There aren’t any good Eruru figures. I don’t know why, what with having the means to beat back the apocalypse and all.
I don’t think Eruru was as likeable a character as Horo. Eruru had one scene in which everyone loved her for, the tailgrab. But beyond that I think interest fades.
Horo on the other hand, can be loved for each and every scene she’s in.
